NAXOS / GRAMOPHONE AWARD WINNER 2005, LABEL OF THE YEAR
Juryns motivering:
Eighteen years ago a new record label was launched. The premise was simple: focus on the music, don't worry about starry performers and charge a price that will encourage people to experiment or simply dip a toe into the often turbid waters of classical music. At the time the major companies viewed the enterprise with a mixture of derision and indifference. A very few years later, some very senior executives were being dispatched to Hong Kong with blank cheques. But the label's owner was not interested in selling.
That label is of course Naxos - and far from 'destroying' the classical record industry, as some of its more extreme critics have claimed, it created a new model for the CD era in the 1990s (though one should point out that Classics for Pleasure, among other labels, was doing something very similar back in the 1970s on LP).
As Naxos approaches its third decade, it's worth reflecting on what it has achieved: a catalogue that is as broad as it is deep; a judicious balancing of the familiar and the obscure; production values that rival the best and, increasingly, a roster of artists of truly international standing. And in the cyber domain, Naxos is easily the most visionary of the classical record labels: web radio and the Naxos Music Library make music available to educational establishments, hotels and public institutions.
And what of the recordings this year? Barely a month has passed without at least one Naxos disc receiving Editor's Choice, and the range of music has been extraordinary. If it is 'core' repertoire that interests you then Paul Daniel conducting Vaughan Williams's Fourth Symphony made the grade last December. Haydn's The Creation received a superb interpretation in June. For unusual fare there were chamber works by Barber (January), and piano works by Rodrigo (April) and Bax (October). From Marin Alsop and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra came a fine John Adams 'primer' (April). And for novelty and innovation, the Awards issue last year brought the first disc in Sir Peter Maxwell Davies's series of Naxos Quartets.
Naxos is now part of every music lover's life and 2005 has been a truly outstanding year. Congratulations to Klaus Heymann and his colleagues all around the world.
