The youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, Johann Christian moved to Italy and then, finally, to London, where, like Handel before him, he won early success in the opera house. Although he had been a skilled keyboard player, he wrote relatively little for the medium, in which the new fortepiano was assuming importance. His Six Keyboard Sonatas, Op. 17, were written and first published in the 1770s and show the influence his work had on Mozart. The pianist Alberto Nosè was Gold Medal Winner of the 2005 Sanatander International Piano Competition.

Following up the first two instalments of THE SIBELIUS EDITION, this third volume offers the complete music for voice and orchestra, including orchestral songs, cantatas, melodramas and the composer's one opera - The Maiden in the Tower. Opening the programme is one of Sibelius's greatest works, Kullervo. This is his first work of symphonic proportions, and was a huge success at its première in 1892, only to be withdrawn soon after by the young composer. Here, for the first time, Sibelius entered the mythological realm of Kalevala, Finland's national epos, a world which he would return to on numerous occasions - for instance in works such as Luonnotar, A Song for Lemminkäinen and The Origin of Fire, all included in this collection. Another theme which runs through Sibelius's output was the yearning for national independence, a yearning which was fulfilled in 1917. The Fool's Song of the Spider, Sandels, Have You Courage? and The Captive Queen are only some of the included works with a more or less overt political message. As with the previous instalments, several of the works are given here in more than one version, mirroring the composer's tendency to return to a score even after publication, as well as his willingness, in certain cases, to adapt a work to varying performance conditions. Also included are the composer's earliest surviving attempts at writing for choir and orchestra: two chorales from his student years. Among the recordings, three have not been previously released, and one of these - the 1912 version of Have You Courage? - is a world première. Assembled in chronological order, the remaining recordings have been collected from a number of earlier discs, released to great critical acclaim. To mention but a few, Osmo Vänskä's Kullervo has been described as 'a first-class account, dramatic and powerfully atmospheric' in Gramophone while the performances of the orchestral songs with Jorma Hynninnen and MariAnne Häggander supported by Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra received a Grand Prix du Disque at the time of their original release.

In 1880 Tchaikovsky's patron, Nadezhda von Meck, asked Tchaikovsky to write a work for her 'house' trio (which included the young Debussy), a request he initially refused. However, after Nicoai Rubenstein's death in 1881 Tchaikovsky returned to the idea of a trio as a means of paying tribute to his friend.Tchaikovsky rebuked the suggestion that the twelve variations of the second movement, with their unusual structure - theme and variations - depicted different aspects of Nicolai's life. In fact Tchaikovsky wrote this music for the enjoyment of the performers which accounts for the trio's popularity amongst chamber musicians.This recording features an established trio each with high profile international careers. The theme of the deploration represents one of the keystones of the Italian baroque revolution in the first half of the 17th century. These lamenti constituted the ideal framework for putting into practice the latest discoveries in expressive solo singing. Freed from the subtleties of counterpoint, it was now able to communicate the emotion expressed in the words directly to the listener. In this respect sacred music was not far behind and it is easy to understand why the plaints of Mary Magdalene at the foot of the Cross were so abundant, especially in Rome where religious music had always occupied a more important position than elsewhere. The solo motets of Rossi, Agneletti, Mazzocchi and Frescobaldi bear dazzling witness to this specifically Roman musical activity.

Gimpel the Fool is a setting of the story by Polish-born American Yiddish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991). In the words of the composer, also of Polish descent, “it turned out to be world full of spirits and demons, as well as a world inseparable from Judaism”. The opera was given its first performance in November 1975 at Hebrew Union College in New York as a version for singers and piano. It was subsequently orchestrated and the full version is heard on this recording. David Schiff was born in New York City in 1945. He studied composition with Ursula Mamlok at the Manhattan School of Music and with Elliott Carter at the Juilliard School, and is the author of books on the music of Elliott Carter and George Gershwin. Since 1980 Schiff has taught at Reed College, Portland, Oregon.

Trial by Jury was the work that firmly established the partnership of Gilbert and Sullivan. It marked the beginning of a run of extraordinary successes over the two decades that permanently changed the face of musical theatre in England. Conceived in some haste as a one-act filler for an evening's entertainment of Offenbach's La Perichole, Trial by Jury quickly established itself as the real hit of the production. Within two months of this first production, Trial by Jury received critical acclaim. Although it was produced early in the Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration, it contains most of the characteristics that define Gilbert and Sullivan's style, most strikingly, the comic use of a disjunction between appearances and reality. Even though Trial by Jury is the smallest of the fourteen works by this remarkable collaboration, it is among Gilbert and Sullivan's most perfect works.

Exhibiting their ability to portray a range of settings and characteristics, Gilbert and Sullivan wrote The Yeoman of the Guard. It is rather serious and realistic work, yet by no means devoid of humor that came after the tremendous successes of H.M.S. Pinafore, The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, Patience, lolanthe and Ruddigore. The Yeoman of the Guard was written in quite a hurry. The overture, for example, was finished during one of the final rehearsals. Even though it was written in haste, there was no evidence of it.

Without ever having received any formal training, Swiss-born composer Frank Martin (1890-1973) spent a long time developing a style which, from his breakthrough in 1942, would make him a highly respected international figure. As the legendary pianist Paul Badura-Skoda put it: 'Many great works of this century are admired; few have the privilege of being loved. Frank Martin created works which are both admired and loved.' On the present disc the works in question are his Cello Concerto, the Ballade for cello (in the version with piano) and the 8 Preludes for piano.

On two previous discs Christian Poltéra has presented works for the cello by composers from his native Switzerland. The latest of these, dedicated to the music of Honegger, was recently released and has already received high praise, for instance on web site Classics Today.com, whose reviewer wrote: 'If you want a superb collection of Honegger's music for cello, both chamber and orchestral, then this CD is just the ticket... a terrific way to plug what is probably a serious repertoire gap in your collection.' It has also received a Diapason d'or in the French magazine Diapason, which called it 'une pure merveille'. Its predecessor, BIS-CD-1597, featured works by the less well-known composer Othmar Schoeck. Upon its release this disc met with a similar reception, for instance from the critic of the Bayerischer Rundfunk, who described Poltéra as 'an imaginative "singer on the cello" with an astounding virtuosity at his disposal'.

As on previous discs in Poltéra's 'Swiss trilogy', he is again supported by Malmö SO under Tuomas Ollila-Hannikainen (in the Concerto) and by eminent pianist Kathryn Stott, who also shines in the Preludes for piano solo, a fascinating display of Martin's broad variety of expression and techniques.

Den tyske kompositören Carl Loewe (1796-1869) är idag mest ihågkommen för sina sånger, men han skrev även bl a operor, oratorier, två symfonier och en del kammarmusik. Under mitten av 1800-talet var det populärt med s k passionoratorier i Tyskland. De bestod av bibliska texter med recitativ, koraler etc och var i mångt och mycket i J S Bachs tradition. 1829 uppfördes Bachs "Matteuspassion" av en ung Felix Mendelssohn. Detta skapade ett enormt intresse för äldre sakral musik och påverkade t ex tonsättare såsom Carl Loewe.

- A chorister at St Mark's in Venice under Monteverdi, Cavalli became organist at the Basilica in 1639 and was to win a reputation as a leading composer of opera for the new commercial opera houses of Venice in the generation after Monteverdi.

- The pastoral Gli amori d'Apollo e di Dafne (The Loves of Apollo and of Daphne) was Cavalli's second opera, setting a libretto by Busenello, who provided the text, three years later, for Monteverdi's last opera, L'incoronazione di Poppea. Cavalli's opera deals with the god Apollo's amorous pursuit of the chaste Daphne, who finds refuge in metamorphosis into a laurel tree, to her lover's distress.

- Alberto Zedda conducts the soloists and Orquesta Joven de la Sinfónica de Galicia, appropriately given that he is highly regarded for his musicological work on his editions of important instrumental works and operas of the eighteenth century.

This German version of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, with set and costumes by Ita Maximowna, dates from the year 1967. The Hamburg State Opera Choir and the Philharmonic State Orchestra of Hamburg are conducted by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, who worked as the opera company’s first conductor between 1935 and 1942 as well as from 1945 to 1971 and was chief conductor of the North German Radio Orchestra, which he had personally been responsible for reorganizing in the post-war years.

It may come as a surprise to learn that the singers, all of whom are now international stars, were drawn exclusively from the Hamburg State Opera ensemble - further proof of Rolf Liebermann’s skill in identifying up-and-coming musicians! The fact that almost all the singers were of roughly the right age for the roles they were playing helped enhance the film’s credibility and realism when it came to close-up shots.

Commissioned by Scottish Ballet, who gave the première at The Edinburgh Festival Theatre on 20 December 2000.

Some time in the mid-1990s came the dream phone-call – Robert Cohan, American choreographer and founder of the London Contemporary Dance Company asking if I would be interested in composing a score for a full length ballet on the subject of Aladdin, for what is the traditional Nutcracker slot, Autumn and Winter. The commission was from Scottish Ballet, then traditionally managed by the distinguished Russian ballerina, Galina Samsova.

Would I? – You bet! The story was familiar to audiences from pantomime. But the source, Sheherezade: 1001 Nights, revealed deeper levels; a Persian story set in China with an important interlude in Morocco. Lots of magic – the lamp, the ring, a flying carpet, split-second set and costume changes.

Every aspect of the story suggested a dance. The strong characters, the roguish but ambitious Aladdin, the powercrazed and sinister Magician and the dreamy Princess who will reveal great courage. On the one hand there are extended pure dance sequences: the cave of jewels is a set of virtually independent solos, the Court entertainment and several soli and pas de deux and the Princess. The Chinese and Near-Eastern elements can be suggested by, on the one hand, melodies based on the Chinese pentatonic scale and on the other, the drone and modes of the Indian Raga. And what a thrill it is to bring on stage the traditional Chinese symbols for good luck, happiness and prosperity – The Lion Dance and The Dragon.

I enjoyed revisiting the score five years after the first successful season by Scottish Ballet in 2000 and sincerely applaud the magnificent performance by the new and exciting Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

I would like to personally thank Abdul Hamid Abu Bakar, Chief Executive Officer and the Management Team of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra for their support and generosity in bringing my Aladdin to life again.

Just one year after his successful and highly acclaimed comeback at the Vienna State Opera he returned to the same opera stage where he made his brilliant debut in 197, as a thirty-year-old: the Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg.

This recital was staged a second time and was also relayed live to a giant screen at the city's Domplatz - a clear indication of the enormous affection with which he was received by the Salzburg public.

The Spanish tenor repays such lively interest with an exclusive programme that includes no less than 23 songs and five encores.

Whereas the first half of the evening was divided into three parts - works from the Italian baroque, French mélodies by Jules Massenet and canzoni by Francesco Paolo Tosti, the second half consisted entirely of Spanish works and focused principally on the songs of Manuel de Falla.

And if not the final encore of the evening, certainly its crowning moment is the song we have come to associate with José Carreras as his vocal trademark - Granada by Agustìn Lara.

Christopher Rouse (b. 1949) is one of America's most prominent composers of orchestral music, and has created a body of work of great emotional intensity. It is precisely this aspect of the music, coupled with its inherent honesty and lack of artifice which has attracted the conductor Alan Gilbert, soon-to-be music director of the New York Philharmonic. During his recent tenure as chief conductor and artistic advisor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Stockholm, Gilbert therefore programmed a number of works by Rouse, performances which were later recorded. This first of two discs includes the composer's Clarinet Concerto - with Martin Fröst performing the solo part - for which American television game shows of the 1950s provided an inspiration. The frantic atmosphere and the sudden reversals of fortune of such programmes infuse this one-movement work, which to quote the composer 'exists in a state of constant flux and change'. The First Symphony is a far more sombre and introspective score, in which Rouse is preoccupied with the nineteenth-century concept of heroism, and the dismantling of this idea in the twentieth century. A reference to this programme is found in the principal motif of the symphony, derived from the opening of the adagio of Bruckner's Seventh Symphony, and played - as in the Bruckner original - by a quartet of Wagner tubas. Like its companion-pieces, Iscariot, which opens the disc, has an extra-musical background, but in this case it is kept a secret by the composer, who has called the work his 'most privately autobiographical piece'. Again a musical quote pervades the work: the famous chorale 'Es ist genug', which bursts forth in a recognizable fashion at the end of the piece.

The Vienna version of Alceste was Gluck's second reform opera after Orfeo ed Euridice. The libretto and music revolve around a self-sacrificing main character, and it is quite probable that the courageous bearing of Empress Maria Theresia while mourning her husband who had died in 1765 provided Gluck with the impetus for working on this old-fashioned material. Alceste demonstrated the virtues typical of the 18th century, being like Beethoven's subsequent Fidelio purely an anthem to conjugal love. As Orfeo before it, Alceste did not achieve major success at the first performance of the Vienna version, which took place at the Vienna Burgtheater on 26 December 1767, but instead became famous nine years later in Paris where it was performed as a tragédie opéra after the addition of ballet music in French (opera text by Marie-François-Louis Grand-Leblanc du Roullet).

This production is a recording made in October 1999 live at the Théâtre du Châtelet, with the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir under the leadership of Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Production and set were by Robert Wilson and costumes by Frida Parmeggiani. Anne Sofie von Otter can be heard and seen singing the title role. Alceste and a new production of Gluck's Orphée et Eurydice, two of his most important works, opened the historical Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris following a year of reconstruction work. It was also the first time that the remarkable artists Robert Wilson and John Eliot Gardiner had ever worked together.

Charles Tomlinson Griffes was born in Elmira, New York, in 1884, Gifted and determined to become a composer, at 19 he went to Germany to continue his piano studies and study musical composition with Engelbert Humperdinck. Upon his return to the States in 1907 he became music director at the Hackley School in Tarry town, New York, a private boys' school. He was now 23 years old, an accomplished musician, cultured, fluent in four languages and eager to throw himself into the creative fray of nearby New York City.

A mere thirteen years later, in 1920, the composer was dead at the age of only 35. He had just achieved renown following Pierre Monteux's successful performances of The Pleasure-Dome of Kubla Khan with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. During this short life, Griffes created a significant and beautiful body of music while undergoing remarkable stylistic evolutions. His early death represents a particularly tragic loss since we can only speculate as to the musical paths that he would have explored.

The music that Griffes wrote in Europe as a student and young man was greatly influenced by the German Romantics. There are a pair of noteworthy two-piano works from this period, both of which are receiving their first recorded performances on this disc. The first is an arrangement of Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel Overture, for which he rightly earned his teacher's approval. Literal and effective, it is skillfully done and displays keen pianistic and coloristic awareness. The other piece is quite wonderful and deserving of regular inclusion in the concert repertoire for two pianos. Entitled Symphonische Phantasie, it was written around 1910 as an arrangement of his own original orchestral work. The Symphonische Phantasie is an ultra-romantic vehicle reminiscent of Wagner, with gorgeous tunes, big rich chords and a direct and fulfilling emotionalism.

Griffes met much of the cultural avant-garde in New York and heard new scores by composers such as Debussy, Ravel, Scriabin, Stravinsky, Busoni, Schoenberg, Milhaud, Prokofiev and Varese. He was also aware of fellow American composers including Omstein, Loeffler, and Farwell. He had significant performances by prominent pianists, singers, string quartets, and received orchestral premieres by the New York Symphony Orchestra under Damrosch, the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Monteux and the Philadelphia Orchestra under Stokowski. His music was greeted with encouragement from musicians, critics, and audiences, and he was becoming established as one of the most important American composers of his generation.

Though often referred to as 'the American Impressionist', this description of Griffes is only partially accurate. Vividly aware of modem cultural trends, his own works absorbed and reflected that awareness. Impressionism was just one such influence. In his best compositions his own unique talents and sensibilities shine forth; the music is original.
